August 4 1914:
George Savile remembers Brackenfield
No message passed between us, but we met
there all the same. Beneath our gathering tree,
just where the common ended, every village
lad and lass had drifted, one by one.
We’d never looked for easy lives – we only
wanted jobs on farms or down the pit;
our village friendships, perhaps a chance of love.
Yet now our need to meet was keen. We sat,
at times we spoke, although we knew what lay
ahead defeated words. Despite our early
shifts we did not move. As evening turned
to darkening night, we knew that once we parted
we could not keep the life we had together.
